Lead-Free Brass Transition Update

From 1 May 2026, we will no longer sell brass products containing lead where they are required to supply drinking water.

Why is this changing?

The New Zealand Government, through MBIE (Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment), has updated the New Zealand Building Code to reduce lead exposure from drinking water.

From 1 May 2026, the Building Code requires that:

• Any new or replacement plumbing fitting that comes into contact with drinking water must be lead-free (no more than 0.25% lead)

Can lead products still be installed after the date?

Only in limited situations, such as:

• Work covered by a building consent approved before 1 May 2026
• Non-drinking water systems (e.g. irrigation, fire services, industrial use)
• Excluded fixtures, such as toilets and appliances that do not supply drinking water

For maintenance or replacement on drinking water systems after May 2026, lead-free fittings must be used.

Where we’re at

• We have already transitioned core lines within our range to lead-free
• We are working with suppliers to ensure that there the balance of our range is available by 1st May

What this means for returns

From 1 April, no returns will be accepted for lead-containing brass products. Reece will continue to meet all of its obligations under the Consumer Guarantees Act.
