Low voltage garden lighting usually uses a 12V power supply. Certain systems may also use a 24V power supply.

Voltage drop is the reduction in voltage experienced between the source and the load in an electrical circuit due to the resistance (or impedance) of the conducting medium. In the context of an outdoor lighting scenario, the consequences of not properly allowing for voltage drop can range from very low output in the case of a Halogen lamp to non-operational lamps in the case of LED fittings. Generally speaking, in an outdoor lighting system a voltage drop of 5% or less is ideal.

Garden lights have a variety of different power ratings (expressed in watts). To work out the total wattage of your light fittings, just add together the wattage of all of the light fittings in your run.

The total length of lighting cable should be calculated from the transformer to last light fitting in the run. It should also include any extra cable needed to connect each of the other lights in the run.
